Ride Designs® Custom Cushions : How It Works
Ride’s blend of orthotic, prosthetic and traditional seating
technologies has resulted in systems
that are unique to the individual and
offer unparalleled protection against skin
breakdown. The key is how the shape of
a seating system is influenced by the shape
of the user’s body, both at rest and in motion.
The Old: Pressure Distribution
Most traditional wheelchair seating systems rely on
pressure distribution to help decrease pressure under bony
prominences. Over time, even the best distribution of pressure
may be inadequate to prevent pressure sores or promote
healing. In addition, conventional pressure distribution materials,
like air, gels and fluids, are inherently unstable forcing the user
to choose a seating system that promotes either healthy skin or
a stable posture, but not both.
The New: Force Isolation
Ride’s products capitalize on the physics of force isolation
to completely remove pressure and shear from high-risk areas
and isolate them to areas more tolerant of pressure and shear.
Using force isolation, our products have proven to help prevent
pressure sores and may also promote healing of pressure sores
that don’t respond to pressure distribution. We use firm, yet
comfortable materials to enhance stable posture and lasting
independence. You’re no longer forced to choose between
healthy skin and good posture.
