Ride Designs® Custom Cushions : Fitting Process
Our cushions are
fitted by Ride Designs
Certified providers who
undergo comprehensive
product training and
education. Each cushion
includes an owner’s
manual, that outlines
the fitting process in
greater detail, and two
Ride Gauges that ensure
an accurate fit.
The fitting process begins by installing the Ride Custom Cushion
without its cover in the wheelchair. A Ride Gauge, a 3/4"
thick piece of impression foam, is placed in the ischial well and
the person transfers on to the cushion. The amount by which
the gauge is compressed measures the degree of off-loading
of the ischial tuberosities. If the person is too low or is actually
"bottoming out" in the cushion, the Ride CAM (Contour
Adjustment Mechanism) can be adjusted to correct the fit. Once
all adjustments are completed, the cover is replaced and the
cushion is ready to go.
The Ride Custom Cushion is the only custom cushion that can be
adjusted without carving, reshaping, or the use of accessories.
Adjustments of the Ride CAM can be done over time to account
for weight loss or muscle atrophy to maintain off-loading and to
improve postural alignment and control.
Important Note: No wheelchair cushion can completely prevent a
pressure sore. People should increase their sitting time gradually while
closely monitoring skin for redness. Once sitting tolerance is established,
daily skin inspections should be completed. If redness appears, use of the
cushion should cease and a physician or health care professional should
be consulted.
